Ong Tong, Khao Soi; Iconic and Comfort

Upstairs Seating

Ong Tong is located in the Ari area and has two floors of seating. They are always busy, especially with many delivery orders happening constantly. I always appreciate the wooden aesthetic, and you can see the wear and tear of its creaky floors and minor damage to the décor, which gives a modest vibe. They have some larger tables upstairs, great for bringing family and friends who can appreciate good northern food. The food is delicious with a large variety, but you cannot skip out on their signature dishes.

Their Khao Soi has a dangerously addictive flavour that is enhanced by egg noodles and crispy noodles, which gives it an explosion of spices and textures. I personally prefer the beef version, as I find the chicken is a little overcooked. The beef is more plain, so it works well with the soup. The curry has a robust flavour with creamy after tones from the coconut milk. I'm usually put off by coconut milk in dishes, but I think the spices are blended well, and that makes it highly delectable. Even though I struggle with spice, I always finish every last drop.

One of my favourite types of soupy noodle dishes is Nam Ngiaw. A tomato-based soup filled with pork ribs and blood cubes. Yes, those darker cubes are made from blood, it may seem a little off-putting, but the taste is lovely, and the texture works well with the Khanom Jeen noodles. I love this bowl, it's such a distinct vibrant red, the taste of the individual ingredients shines, and the strong pork taste is persistent in the broth. I love the umami of the soup, with a tangy flavour from the tomatoes. The rice noodles absorb the soup nicely and make it very filling.

Strangely, Ong Tong is a weekend breakfast staple for me since it's on the way to the weekend market. Ong Tong boasts a deserved five years of being on the Michelin Guide. It's a place that we love to bring friends and family who visit Bangkok from different countries because it's so accessible in terms of flavour. Their main dishes aren't super other than the standard; what makes them unique is their intense combination of spices, cleanliness and quality. The prices aren’t super cheap, but for the indoor seating and quality, it is worth it. Ong tong is a must-try.
