A bustling restaurant in the Silom area sits above a bar, both of which have a distinct dark but modern-esque aesthetic. Even though the restaurant is not new in Bangkok (it opened in 1998), the atmosphere is progressive, with a young feel emanating from its sleek and muted colour scheme. A bamboo-shrouded veranda adds mystique to the establishment, and the lighting is dim, further enhancing this romantic ambience.
Fish collars are a favourite of mine; this part of the fish has a more pungent taste, despite probably being the most tender part. Simply grilling the collar with salt and having it with freshly steamed rice is a perfect meal for me. Despite the lack of rice, I think their rendition was good, and their pricing is comparable to most Japanese restaurants. The miso butter was an interesting addition; however, I felt it added too much fattiness to this already rich part of the fish. In an izakaya (more informal) setting, having the bone on the fish is fine; however, in a restaurant setting, this fish shouldn't be served on the bone, as it may deter some eaters. I personally always enjoy the challenge.
The lamb was cooked perfectly and had a gamey flavour; serving it with goat cheese amplified the strong taste. The rocket added a freshness to the dish that it desperately needed. I would have liked a savoury sauce to complement the meat, and I think a suitable red wine pairing would have elevated the meal. The asparagus side dish works nicely with parmesan; however, I think it would have been better as a simple vegetable dish without all the garnishes.
On their website, they describe their dishes as "characterised by daring flavour combinations, which showcase a kaleidoscope of international ingredients." They definitely embrace this philosophy, and you can see it clearly in the ingredients they choose to pair together, such as the paprika and thyme in the chowder dish. However, it is a double-edged sword; I felt that some of their dishes were trying too hard to be special, for example, the asparagus. None of their food tasted bad per se, but I would have personally enjoyed it more with a couple of ingredients left off the plate. To conclude, EAT ME is a young and energetic restaurant with diverse and unique food, so I highly recommend making a reservation for your next fun dinner destination.
